The Disappearing Roommate

It was the year 2012 when Aisha moved into a rented apartment in Delhi. The building was old, but the rent was cheap, and she was happy to share it with a girl named Meera, who had already been living there for months.

From the first night, something felt strange. Aisha often heard footsteps in the kitchen around 2 a.m., even though Meera was in her room with the door locked. She thought Meera just liked midnight snacks, so she ignored it.

One weekend, Aisha returned from her hometown and noticed the apartment was unusually cold. The windows were shut, but she could still feel a draft. As she unpacked, she realized Meera hadn’t spoken to her in days. She knocked on Meera’s door. Silence. She assumed Meera was out with friends.

But that night, as Aisha tried to sleep, she heard soft humming coming from Meera’s room. It wasn’t any song she knew—just a strange, slow tune. She felt uneasy but tried to ignore it.

The next morning, Aisha decided to finally talk to Meera. She knocked on the door again, but it swung open slightly. The room was completely empty. No clothes, no bags, nothing—just dust and an old photograph lying on the floor. The photo showed a young woman sitting on the balcony of that very apartment… but the image was dated 1998.

Shaken, Aisha went to the landlord and asked about Meera. The landlord looked puzzled.
“Meera? Child, you’re mistaken. That flat has been empty for years. The last girl who stayed there… her name was Meera. She died in that very room more than a decade ago.”

Aisha froze.
“But I’ve been living with her for weeks!”

The landlord shook his head. “Many tenants say that. They see her, they talk to her. But she’s gone. That’s why rent is so cheap.”

Aisha ran back upstairs, trembling. She opened Meera’s room once more—this time, the air was colder than ever, and faint humming filled the silence. She dropped the photo and fled the building, never to return.

To this day, the apartment remains rented out at low cost. New tenants claim they see a girl at night, brushing her hair by the balcony, humming the same eerie tune.
